When Do I Need a Permit?
The question often arises as to just when a building permit is required. Below are some of the projects for which a permit is required, along with guidelines for submitting your application and some of the code requirements.

Please keep in mind that, if you are planning an improvement, you need to check with your local homeowner's association and architectural control committee for Conditions, Covenants, and Restrictions (CC&Rs). CC&R s are private controls that run with the land; you should have been given a copy these when you bought your house. CC&Rs can control the size and location of buildings, their architectural style, and even the color of the paint. If your house is part of a larger subdivision in Gurnee, the chances are good that your property is covered by these special rules. While the Village can't enforce CC&Rs, your neighbors can. Please check your CC&Rs before embarking on a project that changes the exterior of your home or yard.
