What is the Citizen Fire Academy?

  • Why do so many fire trucks go to a call?
  • Does the ambulance always use lights and siren when transporting someone to the hospital?
  • How does my fire department stay prepared to handle emergencies?
  • What do the firefighters do all day?
  • How does the fire department help keep my insurance rate low?
  • Why does a fire truck go to a car accident?
  • What kind of training does it take to become a firefighter?

The Gurnee Fire Department Citizen Fire Academy was established to answer questions like these and more. One night a week for twelve weeks, we will teach you how your firefighters do their jobs. For the first time, citizens will be able to gain classroom and hands-on experience to help them understand what being a firefighter is about.

The Gurnee Fire Department Citizen Fire Academy will include hands-on experience with: fire hose, self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), ropes & knots, CPR and fire extinguishers. The academy also has tours of communications, fire apparatus and an ambulance. Each participant who completes the class will be scheduled for a ride-along to experience first hand what a firefighter's day consists of and what it's like to ride on an emergency response. Each participant will receive a personalized notebook for class notes & certificate.
