Outdoor Burning Restrictions
As of January 1, 1998, it is unlawful to build, ignite, or maintain any outdoor fire within the Village.
The burning of leaves and other landscape waste is banned within the Village.
Burning is allowed for the preparation of food, in indoor fireplaces, and in small outdoor wood burning fires.
Wetland burns as required by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are also permitted.
Burning Guidelines
The Gurnee Fire Department has outlined the following guidelines regarding outdoor burning within the Gurnee corporate limits.
- No outdoor wood burning fire shall be closer than 25 feet from any building structure, shed, garage, trees, shrubs, bushes, fence or any other combustible material. Approved portable fireplaces (Weber type) are exempt from the 25 foot rule.
- No outdoor wood burning fire shall be larger than 36 inches in diameter and no more than 24 inches in height.
- Portable fire pits (defined as devices commercially designed and intended to contain and control outdoor wood fires) may be used in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendation and within the requirements of number 2 above.
- No outdoor wood burning fires shall be started or allowed to continue burning when the wind speed (20 mph) will cause smoke, embers, or other burning materials to be carried by the wind toward any building or other flammable materials.
- Material for an outdoor wood burning fire shall only be clean dry wood.
- Adequate fire suppression equipment shall be immediately available to extinguish or control the outdoor wood burning fire. Adequate fire suppression equipment such as shovels, fire extinguishers, water hoses, or other like equipment sufficient to extinguish the fire if necessary, shall be available and accessible.
All outdoor wood burning fires shall be attended at all times by at least one responsible person from the start of the fire until the fire is completely extinguished.
