GURNEE, IL - On Friday, August 28, 2009 at 5:21 PM, Gurnee Police Officers responded to a reported armed robbery that had just occurred at the Shell Gas Station, 6050 West Grand Ave. The 39 year old male station attendant reported that he was robbed at gunpoint by a single African-American male offender.
The offender entered the store like any other customer. The attendant did not notice him until he stood in front of the counter. The offender started to make small talk with the attendant and then walked around the counter and told the attendant to open the cash drawer. When he hesitated the offender poked him in the side with a hard object. The attendant looked down and saw a large black semiautomatic handgun. The attendant opened the cash drawer and the offender took an undisclosed amount of cash from the drawer and stuffed it into a backpack he was carrying. He then walked out of the store and then ran west through the lot and toward the Chili’s restaurant nearby. No one was injured in the incident. No other customers were in the store at the time of the robbery. Officers and a K-9 searched the area but did not locate the offender.
The offender is described as an African-American male, approximately 5’ 10”, 170 lbs. He appeared to be around 35 years of age with short hair. The offender was wearing a brown hat, sunglasses, white polo shirt and khaki pants, white athletic shoes and carrying a black backpack.
Along with this release are some still images captured from the security cameras inside the station. The Gurnee Police Department is asking anyone that may have any information about this crime or the suspect, to please contact the Gurnee Police Department at 847-599-7000 or Lake County Crime Stoppers at 847-662-2222.
