GURNEE - December 29, 2008 -
The Des Plaines at Russell is forecast to crest Monday evening at 8.5 feet (flood stage is 7.0
feet, damage to homes begins at 9.5 feet) and the Des Plaines at Gurnee (Route 120) is expected to crest
Wednesday at 8.7 feet before it begins to recede. The Des Plaines in Gurnee spills over its banks at
approximately 7.0 feet, problems with roadway access along Emerald Avenue and Kilbourne Road occur at
approximately 8.5 feet, and buildings are impacted at 9.0 feet. At this time the Village simply wants to make
area residents and businesses aware of the situation. The Village does not see an immediate need to leave the
area. The Village has taken precautionary measures by securing supplies and notifying residents and businesses of
the situation. At this point, sandbagging operations have NOT been implemented; however we continue to monitor
developments and this could change if rain fall totals exceed predictions.
If you begin to have water come into your basement, please remember to take extreme caution for
possible electric shock. The Village would like to urge anyone with flooded basements to contact the Gurnee
Communications Center at (847) 599-7000 to have the power disconnected prior to entering the basement.
Please review the Family Protection Plan available on the Village's website at: /fire/family_protection_program/index.html
in particular pages 10 & 11 on flooding. This information should help you to take preventative measures in
the event of a flood.
If you have questions regarding this information, please contact the Village Hall at (847)
