Des Plaines River Notice - 1:00pm, 12/31/08

GURNEE - December 31, 2008 - Over an inch of rain combined with temperatures reaching the mid-50s resulted in a rapid rising in the Des Plaines River over the weekend. Unfortunately, the USGS River Gauges that are used to monitor the river were inoperable late last week; as a result Lake County Stormwater Management Commission has been making manual readings. While USGS predictions as of 10am on December 30th have the river in Gurnee cresting at 8.7 feet Wednesday evening (12/31), according to readings by Lake County SMC it appears the river in Gurnee crested at 8.35 feet earlier this week (12/29). Upstream in Russell, the river has been hovering around 8.8 feet. Downstream in Des Plaines, the river crested on Sunday night and has since receded over a foot.

If you begin to have water come into your basement, please remember to take extreme caution for possible electric shock. The Village would like to urge anyone with flooded basements to contact the Gurnee Communications Center at (847) 599-7000 to have the power disconnected prior to entering the basement.

Please review the Family Protection Plan available on the Village's website at: /fire/family_protection_program/index.html in particular pages 10 & 11 on flooding. This information should help you to take preventative measures in the event of a flood.

If you have questions regarding this information, please contact the Village Hall at (847) 599-7500.
