[Gurnee, IL]– The Gurnee Police Department received a 9-1-1 call at 9:32 PM Sunday evening for a male subject that was creating some type of disturbance at a home in the 3400 block of Pacific Avenue. Upon arrival officers were told by a female resident in the home that the 37 year old male outside was her husband and he was acting strangely and threatened to harm himself with a knife.

Officers saw the male subject walking around the yard with a knife in his hand. He eventually stood behind a tree in the front yard. The officers attempted to talk to the subject for several minutes. The subject, after a while, came out from behind the tree. He was ordered to drop the knife and get down on the ground several times. The subject would not comply and an officer armed with a less lethal 12 gauge shotgun fired a less lethal impact round at the subject. The less lethal round had no apparent effect and the subject began advancing toward the officers’ position. The subject was struck with several more less lethal impact rounds. None of the less lethal rounds were effective in stopping the subject as he continued to advance on the officers. The officers continued to shout commands to the subject to stop and drop the knife. As the subject continued advancing and closed the distance with the officers, one officer fired three rounds from his duty handgun striking the subject.

The male subject had wounds to his chest, abdomen and hand. He was treated at the scene by Gurnee Fire Department Paramedics and transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. He underwent surgery and will likely recover from his wounds. The officer involved was also transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center for evaluation. The 32 year old, two year veteran officer was examined and released. No officers were injured in the incident.

The Lake County Major Crime Task Force is conducting the investigation, which is standard perating procedure for officer involved shootings.
