On Tuesday, 09/07/10 at 2:01 PM, the Gurnee Police Department received a report of an accident with injuries involving an all-terrain-vehicle (ATV) and a utility pole near the intersection of Magnolia and Pacific Avenues.

The first officer on the scene saw a male subject performing CPR on another male subject lying on the ground. The officer deployed an automatic external defibrillator (AED) and administered a shock to regain a pulse. The male victim and sole rider of the ATV was transported to Vista Medical Center-East in Waukegan by Gurnee Fire paramedics. The victim, Terry E. Matthews, 30, of 3759 Grandmore Ave., Gurnee, had suffered significant internal injuries and was pronounced dead at 3:12 PM.

Witnesses at the scene said they were driving southbound on Magnolia and saw the ATV also traveling southbound on the west side of Magnolia in the right-of-way area, off the street. Matthews appeared to lose control of the ATV. The ATV flipped and Matthews was ejected from the ATV and he struck a utility pole. No one else was injured and no other property was damaged.

The accident remains under investigation. An autopsy was scheduled for today at the Lake County Coroner’s facility in Waukegan.
