Gurnee, IL – Beginning November 12th and running through November 28th 2010, the Gurnee Police Department conducted occupant protection enforcement zones throughout the village. Funded by a Sustained Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) grant from the Illinois Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, these zones were established in order to achieve the following goals:
1. To increase enforcement of occupant restraint laws.
2. To achieve a higher use of safety belts, child safety and booster seats.
3. To improve safety restraint compliance between 9:00 PM and 6:00 AM.
Sixty hours were committed to occupant protection enforcement zones established at various locations throughout the village. Thirty-six of those hours were specifically at occupant protections zones established between the hours of 9:00 PM and 6:00 AM.
Also during the same time period, 24 hours worth of extra patrols were deployed village-wide to combat drunk driving, drugged driving, and speeding.
The results of these STEP Grant operations are as follows:
- Numbers of details conducted: 15
- Number of safety restraint violations: 76 (31 written between 9:00 PM and 6:00 AM)
- Number of drug/alcohol-related arrests: 4
- Number of vehicles stopped: 89
- Total number of citations written: 119
