1. Village Continues Response to July 11th Thunderstorm

The Village continues its clean up efforts in response to the July 11th Thunderstorm.  On Monday, August 1st, the Public Works Department will begin its last round of the Village to pick up any remaining downed branches.  Residents are encouraged to drag any remaining branches to the curb before that date.  Branches should be placed on the curb with their cut ends facing the street.  The Village will regularly update a webpage on its website with information on where crews will be located beginning on August 1st.  Regardless of where crews are located, residents should move branches to the curb as soon as possible to ensure that they will be picked up.  Please note that it is not necessary to call the Public Works Department to notify them that branches are ready for pick up.  Once Public Works closes out a subdivision, they will not return.

While power has been restored to all Gurnee residents, it is important to contact Com Ed anytime your power goes out.  Residents may call 1-800-Edison-1 to report the outage. ComEd will NOT know that you are experiencing an outage if you do not notify them.

For any questions on branch pick up, please contact the Public Works Department at (847) 599-6800.

2. Des Plaines River Level Update

As of 8 a.m. this morning (Friday, July 29th), the Des Plaines River appears to have crested at 6.89 feet.  The National Weather Service projects that the river will descend over the next few days as there should be abundant sunshine and little precipitation.  If there is any change in forecast, the Village will send out updates via the Flood and Emergency Operations listserv.  To sign up for this listserv, visit the Village's website.

As a reminder, the Des Plaines spills over its banks at approximately 7.0 feet, problems with roadway access along Emerald Avenue and Kilbourne Road occur at approximately 8.5 feet, and buildings are impacted at 9.0 feet.

The Village has had some reports of flooded basements.  Residents with items to dispose of beyond the one extra item allowed outside the cart should contact Waste Management at 1-800-796-9696 and request a Bulk Pick-up Estimate.  Bulk Pick-up is currently $17.89 per cubic yard.  Due to EPA regulations, appliances cannot be disposed of in any Illinois landfills. This includes refrigerators, freezers, stoves, washers, dryers, water heaters, air conditioners, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, etc.  To dispose of them, please contact 1-800-GOT-JUNK or Environmental Field Services at 1-800-480-4337.

You can track the Des Plaine River current and projected levels at the National Weather Service's website.

3. Village Utility Billing Rates and Structure to Change Saturday, October 1st

A water main break on Old Grand AvenueAt the June 20th regular meeting, the Village Board approved Ordinance 2011-50, which modified several sections of the Municipal Code related to water and sewer rates and structure.  Beginning on October 1st, the Village will restructure water and sewer billing rates and frequency.  Under this system, residents and businesses will pay a base fee for water and sewer service per bill and then pay for any usage instead of the Village charging a minimum usage bill.  Base fees will depend on the water meter size of the respective customer.  For single family residences, the base fee for water and sewer service will be $10.93 per bill.  The modified combined water and sewer rates for all users will be $4.97 per 1,000 gallons, an 8% increase.  The average single family household, using roughly 6,000 gallons of water a month, will be $70.57 per bill.

In addition, the Village will move from a quarterly billing cycle to a bimonthly billing cycle.  This means residents and businesses will be billed six times a year instead of four.  The main advantages of this move will be faster detection of problems for residents and businesses.

You can learn more about these upcoming changes on the Village's website.  For any questions, contact Village Hall at (847) 599-7500.

4. Crime Alert: Auto Burglaries

The Gurnee Police Department has had 17 auto burglaries reported in the general vicinity of Grand Avenue immediately east and west of the Tollway since July 1st.

Points of entry to each vehicle include unlocked vehicle doors, partially open side windows being pulled down by force and side windows smashed out. Suspects seem to be focusing on parking areas at local businesses where employees park their cars. They are targeting items such as purses, laptop computers, cell phones, MP3 players, after-market stereo equipment and GPS units.

When parking your car, please remember to lock your car, take your keys and hide any valuables from sight.  Also, parking in well-lit and well-populated areas of parking lots has proven to be an effective deterrent to many different crimes.

Investigation of these cases remains active. If you have any information about these felony crimes please feel free to contact the Gurnee Police Department at 847-599-7000. You may also report information anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers at 847-662-2222.

Please feel free to contact the crime prevention unit at 847-599-7080 with any questions or concerns you may have.

5. Police Department Accepting Applications for Police Citizens Academy

The Gurnee Police Department will be holding a Citizens Police Academy beginning August 25th and running through November 17th.  Classes will be held each Thursday from 7 to 10 p.m.  Classes will cover many areas of police operation such as the 911 Center, Investigations and Patrol.  For an application or more information, visit the the Police Department’s website.

6. "Gurnee's Got It!" Continues through October 15th

The 2011 "Gurnee's Got It!" Campaign launched Wednesday, June 15th and will continue through Saturday, October 15th.  Coupons are now available on the website as well as sweepstakes entries.

As with the 2010 campaign, everyone is invited to visit the "Gurnee's Got It!" website, download any and all coupons you would like and redeem them at local businesses!  You can also enter this year's sweepstakes for one of three free one-year car leases from Michael Fohrman's Gurnee Dodge Chrysler Jeep or a number of other prizes.

"Gurnee's Got It!" is local marketing campaign made possible through the collaboration of the Village of Gurnee, Gurnee Park District and the Lake County Visitors' and Convention Bureau with Michael Fohrman's Gurnee Dodge Chrysler Jeep and the Village of Gurnee Chamber of Commerce.

For any questions, visit the campaign's website or contact Village Hall at (847) 599-7500.

8. Reminder: Local Sprinkling Restrictions

As a friendly reminder, the Village does have water sprinkling restrictions between May 15th and September 15th each year.  The Village's restrictions use an even/odd system where even numbered houses may water their lawns on even numbered days and vice versa for odd numbered houses.  Residents may sprinkle their lawns any time between 6 p.m. on 10 a.m. on their respective day.  If you are using a hand held device (watering can, bucket or hose), you may water at any time.  For any questions, contact the Public Works Department at (847) 599-6800.

9. Local Resources: Warren Township Senior Center

The Warren Township Senior Center, located on 17801 W. Washington St, offers a wide variety of programming for seniors including exercise classes, card game groups and other activities.  For a full list of programs and more information, visit Warren Township's website.

10. Question of the Week: Will Waste Management accept any Items not placed in my garbage can?

Waste Management utilizes an automated collection system which collects refuse left in garbage cans.  Residents are allowed to leave one out item each week for bulk collection with their regular garbage.  This item must be "non-attached," meaning typically something you would bring with you if you moved (i.e. furniture, a mattress, etc).

Waste Management will also accept "construction materials" such as drywall, toilets, sinks, panels, etc.  However, they cannot be left out with regular trash.  Please contact Waste Management 24 hours in advance of your pick up to arrange for this special pick up.  A fee of $17.98 per cubic yard will be assessed.

Waste Management will not collect "attached items" such as cabinetry or water heaters or "white goods" such as stoves or washing machines.  You should contact a third party vendor to collect those items.

For any questions on regular pick up, contact Waste Management at 1-800-796-9696.  For any questions about other items, contact the Solid Waste Agency of Lake County (SWALCO) at 847-336-9340.
