1. Special Message on the July 11th Thunderstorm

As you know, a powerful thunderstorm knocked out power to over 850,000 Com Ed customers in Chicagoland on July 11th.  Northern Lake County was particularly hard hit, with roughly 90% of all Com Ed customers in the Village losing power.  The Village coordinated a response with Com Ed focusing on getting major thoroughfares reopened and restoring power to critical facilities such as senior living facilities and public safety buildings.

The Village would like to thank all residents and businesses for their patience and willingness to assist one another during the events of that week, particularly with helping to spread information.

As a reminder, should your business lose power, please contact Com Ed at 1-800-EDISON-1 to report the outage.  Com Ed depends on this information to assess outages and coordinate their efforts to restore power as soon as possible.

Should another extreme weather event occur, please familiarize yourself with the Village's resources to know where you can find information.  These resources include:

  • Connect CTY Calls.  The Village uses this automated calling system to update residents and businesses on a wide range of issues ranging from emergency updates and amber alerts to more routine information.
  • The Village's Website.  The Village will update its website throughout and after a major event where possible.  Posts will also be made to the Village's Twitter account.
  • The Village's listservs.  In the event of an emergency, the Village will send information over all listservs.  However, for events such as flooding, the Flooding and Emergency Information listserv will most likely be the only listserv used.  You can sign up for this listserv at the link above.
  • Other Informational Resources.  In the event of an emergency, other agencies will also issue informational communications.  Other local agencies where you can find information include Lake County, Com Ed, State of Illinois and others depending on the emergency.

To also prepare for an emergency, please review the resources available through the Village's Police and Fire Departments to see if any may be beneficial to your business.

For any questions, please contact Village Hall at (847) 599-7500.

2. Village to Modify Utility Billing Rates and Structure

A water main break on Old Grand AvenueBeginning on October 1st, the Village will restructure water and sewer billing rates and frequency.  Under this system, residents and businesses will pay a base fee for water and sewer service per bill and then pay for any usage instead of the Village charging a minimum usage bill.  Base fees will depend on the water meter size of the respective customer.  The modified combined water and sewer rates for all users will be $4.97 per 1,000 gallons, an 8% increase.

In addition, the Village will move from a quarterly billing cycle to a bimonthly billing cycle.  This means residents and businesses will be billed six times a year instead of four.  The main advantages of this move will be faster detection of problems for residents and businesses.

You can learn more about these upcoming changes on the Village's website.  For any questions, contact Village Hall at (847) 599-7500.

3. Village of Gurnee Chamber of Commerce August Events

The Village of Gurnee Chamber of Commerce will be holding a number of events this month:

  • Come join the Chamber to celebrate the grand opening of Asian Gourmet (1207 N Skoke Hwy).  The Chamber will hold a Business After Hours event at the opening starting at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 11th.
  • The Chamber will hold another Business After Hours event at Baker's Square (6340 Grand) to celebrate the restaurant's grand re-opening at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 16th.
  • On Wednesday, August 17th, the Chamber will hold a Membership Meeting at Stevens' Restaurant from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

For any questions or to RSVP, visit the Chamber's website.

4. Lake County Launches a "Buy Local" Initiative

On Wednesday, August 3rd, Lake County announced the launch of a new "Buy Local" Initiative.  The County, like the Village, has always tried to purchase goods and services from local businesses.  Under the new plan, County departments are required to obtain multiple quotes from local vendors and award contracts to Lake County businesses where possible, and as allowed under state law. Lake County projects potentially $16 million more being invested in the local economy, as a result of this renewed effort.  Lake County departments will seek out local vendors for purchases under the legal bid limit of $30,000, while also considering other factors such as price, quality, terms, and service delivery. Lake County will strive to ensure that local businesses have the opportunity to do business with the county, while also continuing to be good stewards of tax dollars and maintaining compliance with the law. Local governments are mandated by state law to purchase goods and services at the lowest cost.

Businesses interested in learning more about opportunities with Lake County can visit www.lakecountyil.gov and click on "Doing Business" in the Quick Links. Businesses can also register to receive email notifications of bids, requests for proposal (RFP), and other solicitations.

5. Reminder: Temporary Sign Permits

As a friendly reminder, please note that the Village requires a permit for any temporary signs a business uses.  A temporary sign includes any banner, pennant, valence or advertising display that will not be a permanent fixture.  Please note that businesses are allowed to use temporary signs up to 14 days a year.  For a copy of the application and general guidelines, visit the Village's website.  For any questions, contact the Planning Division at (847) 599-7550.

6. Collection Agency Calls

Please note that the Village's Finance Division has switched to a new collections agency (ICS Collections) for past due accounts.  If you receive a call and believe that the charge may be in error, contact Erica Wells at (847) 599-7526 to discuss any corrections.  If you have any other business licensing or taxation questions, they may be directed to that number as well.

7. "Gurnee's Got It" 2011 continues through October 15th

The 2011 "Gurnee's Got It!" Campaign launched Wednesday, June 15th and continues through Saturday, October 15th.  Coupons are now available on the website as well as sweepstakes entries.
