[Gurnee, IL] – The suspect in the Thursday afternoon stabbing incident on Grand Avenue has been charged and appeared in bond court this morning in Waukegan. Thomas A. Zervont, 18, of Waukegan has been charged with one count of First Degree Murder and one count of Attempted First Degree Murder in the stabbing death of Stefan A. Metel, 33, of Round Lake and the stabbing of a 17 year old passenger in the Jeep they were riding in. Zervont was remanded to the Lake County Jail on a $5 million bond.
Metel was the driver and owner of the 1992 Jeep Cherokee that was involved in this incident. Metel was an acquaintance of Zervont, the two apparently had met in the Lake County Jail. Zervont had allegedly contacted Metel and asked him for a ride. After picking up Zervont, Metel lso stopped and picked up the 17 year old male.
While driving down Grand Avenue, an argument began between Zervont and Metel about their immediate destination. Zervont allegedly stabbed Metel and then stabbed the 17 year old front passenger. The juvenile jumped from the moving vehicle onto Grand Avenue. The vehicle continued to roll down Grand and veered off onto a berm near the intersection of Grand Ave and Arlington Lane, and came to a stop near the Anthony Buick GMC dealership.
Zervont got out of the Jeep and made his way over to the dealership. At the same time, Metel left the Jeep and also went into the service area of the dealership and collapsed. Zervont was detained by employees of the car dealership and taken into custody by a Lake County Sheriff’s deputy who had been flagged down by a bystander.
Gurnee Fire/Rescue transported Metel and the 17 year old victim to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. Metel was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The 17 year old was treated for his injuries and held overnight. His injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
There had been some confusion at the scene as there were reports of individuals with gunshot wounds and reports of an armed suspect having fled the scene through the residential neighborhood next to the dealership. Responding officers armed with rifles were conducting a search of the immediate area based on the initial reports. Those reports proved to be inaccurate. There were no firearms involved and no other suspects. A large folding knife was recovered near the Jeep.
The Lake County Major Crime Task Force is assisting the Gurnee Police Department with the investigation.
