GURNEE, IL – For the tenth consecutive year, the Gurnee Exchange Clubs will be holding a 9/11 Community Remembrance Ceremony on Sunday, September 11th, 2011 from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. at Viking Park.  This event, which is free and open to the public, will recognize the many instances of heroism, bravery, and generosity, which have reflected back so strongly on all Americans since September 11th, 2001.

The ceremony will again include The Blue Ribbon Field.  The blue ribbon symbolizes child abuse prevention, which was adopted by the National Exchange Club as its program of service.  In 2007, more than 3.2 million cases of child abuse were reported.   In that same year, an estimated 1760 children died from abuse or neglect.

Through the National Exchange Foundation, more than 100 child abuse prevention centers are now in operation.  545,000 families have successfully broken the cycle of child abuse and neglect through the work of these centers,.  Trained “Parent Aides” enter the homes of families at risk of child abuse and neglect and work with the parents in a supportive relationship to break the cycle of abuse.  In Illinois, Exchange operates the Guardian Angel Community Services Center in Joliet and the NCO Youth and Family Services program in Naperville.

In viewing the Blue Ribbon Field during our Remembrance Cermony, please keep in mind that each blue ribbon flag represents approximately 10 children whose lives have ended because of child abuse.

The Gurnee Exchange Clubs is a chapter of the national service organization Exchange,an organization of men and women working together to make communities better places to live through programs of service in Americanism, Community Service, Youth Activities and its national project, the Prevention of Child Abuse.
