Gurnee, ILThe Gurnee Police Department has tied with the Carol Stream Police Department for a second place finish in the 2010-2011 “Illinois Traffic Safety Challenge.” The “Challenge” is a program sponsored by the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police. The Department was presented with a trophy on Aug. 25 at an award ceremony at the Midwest Security and Police Conference/Expo in Peoria. This is the third time the department has received an “Illinois Traffic Safety Challenge” award since first participating in the program beginning in 2000.

Each year police departments from all over Illinois enter written submissions detailing their traffic safety programs and efforts to reduce traffic crashes. The contest goal is to promote a focus on traffic safety initiatives and showcase innovative programs for law enforcement agencies. Submissions are reviewed and judged based on specific criteria by a panel of law enforcement professionals. Gurnee competed against law enforcement agencies in Illinois with 50-100 sworn officers.

Also, the Gurnee Police Department was recently awarded a $39,302.00 “Sustained Traffic Enforcement Program” (STEP) grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Illinois Department of Transportation. The purpose of the STEP program is to reduce the incidence of motor vehicle crashes, and the resulting injuries and fatalities, through increased highly visible enforcement of occupant restraint, impaired driving, speed, pedestrian safety and motorcycle licensing and registration laws during the national and state enforcement campaigns. The funds will cover the 2011-2012 grant year which begins on October 1st, 2011.

Gurnee Deputy Police Chief Kevin Woodside said “We are pleased to have our traffic enforcement efforts recognized in this statewide challenge and the grant funding helps us continue to ensure safer travel and promote traffic safety in the Village.”
