1. Trick-or-Treating Hours to be held Sunday, October 30th from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The Gurnee Police Department requests that all trick-or-treaters limit haunting to the hours of 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 30, 2011. The Village also asks that you be respectful of your neighbors while trick-or-treating. Only go to homes of people you know. If you have questions regarding trick-or-treating hours, please contact the Village of Gurnee Police Department at (847) 599-7000.

The Gurnee Fire Department would like to remind everyone to be safe during trick-or-treating.  First, make sure to buy flame resistant costumes.  These costumes will resist burning and should extinguish quickly once removed from a heat source.  Similarly, make sure your trick-or-treaters can walk safely in their costumes - falls are the number one source of injuries during Halloween.

For more tips, see the October issue of Keeping Posted or call the Fire Prevention Bureau at (847) 599-6680.

2. First Transition Water and Sewer Bills to Arrive in the Next Few Days

As discussed in previous e-mails and in the October issue of Keeping Posted, the Village transitioned to a new water billing system on Saturday, October 1st.  The first new water and sewer bills under this system will be delivered to residents living east of the Tollway during this weekend or early next week.  Please note that this bill contains usage from both the old and new systems and may be significantly different than your previous bills because it reflects a different time period and different rate structure.

Residents living west of the Tollway will receive their bill in mid to late November.  At that time, we will issue another notice over this listserv.

For more information, please visit the new water billing information page on the Village's website  or call Village Hall at (847) 599-7500.

3. Maintenance Worker I Recruitment Process Open

Applications for the position of Maintenance Worker with the Gurnee Public Works Department are currently available to establish a new eligibility hiring list. To obtain application information, please visit the Village's website.  Required materials must be received by 3:00 p.m. November 9, 2011.

4. Leaf Collection to continue through Saturday, November 26th

Waste Management began the annual leaf collection program on Monday, October 17th and will continue the program through Saturday, November 26th.  During this period, Waste Management will complete six rounds of the Village to collect leaves.  Today (Friday, October 28th), Waste Management will complete Week 2 and has not reported any delays.

As a friendly reminder, please place leaves at the curb and not in the street as this may lead to localized flooding.  Correctly placed leaves also make the collection more efficient and lead to less interruptions.  Leaves should be at the curb no later than 6 a.m. on each Monday to ensure their collection.  Look for more details on the Village's website or call Waste Management at (1-800) 796-9696.

5. First Nationwide Test of the Emergency Alert System to be held Wednesday, November 9th

The first ever nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) will be held Wednesday, November 9th at 1 p.m. central time (2 p.m. EST).  As you may know, the EAS is an alert and warning systems that transmits messages by television, cable, radio and the internet.  It is most commonly used to broadcast severe weather notices and amber alerts.  However, what most people do not know is that the EAS has several small components that have never been simultaneously tested.  This nationwide test will help the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Federal Communications Commission (FCC) discover errors in the system and correct them before it should ever become necessary to issue a nationwide alert.

For more information on this test and the EAS, visit the FCC's website.

6. Veterans Day Celebration to be held Friday, November 11th

A Veterans Day celebration will be held on Friday, November 11th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Police Station.  The celebration is being held as part of a local Eagle Scout Project.  See the event's flyer on the Village's website.

7. Reminder: Woodchips Available at the Public Works Facility and Northwestern Water Tower

As a reminder, please note that there are woodchips available to the public at the Public Works Facility (1151 Kilbourne) and at the Northwestern Avenue water tower at no cost.  These chips have been double ground and would be suitable for most outdoor projects requiring mulch.  Please feel free to stop at either facility and take as much as you would like.  For any questions, please contact the Public Works Department at (847) 599-6800.

8. Local Resources: Days Off School with Gurnee Park District

Do you find yourself looking for something for your children to do on their days off from school?  Gurnee Park District offers day trips to numerous attractions in the area for those days when Districts 50 and 56 do not have school.  Look for more information on the Park District's website.

9. Question of the Week: Does the Village have a composting site?

The Village does not have a composting site where residents can drop their biodegradable items off.  However, the Village does want to encourage residents to compost at home.  If you would like to learn more about composting at home, the Solid Waste Agency of Lake County (SWALCO) offers a variety of information and sells compost bins to the public.  Look for more information on SWALCO's website.
