1. Corrected Water Bills to be Issued

As part of the recent water billing transition, the Village issued the first round of new bills to residents living east of the Tollway last Friday.  Unfortunately, some of those bills had a calculation error.  The Village has identified that error and has almost completed testing to ensure that it is corrected for a reissuance.  You can identify an incorrect bill by reading the "Service Description" portion of your bill.  If it contains the language "WA Minimum Charge," you have an incorrect bill and will receive a new one in the next few weeks.  Please note that late fees will be waived for those incorrectly billed and automatic debits for these accounts will not be processed until a correct bill has been calculated.

If you would like to pay before the reissuance, please note that the difference between the incorrect and correct bills will be credited to your account for your next bill.

If the "Service Description" portion of your bill simply says, "WA Water," you have a correct bill and should pay as you normally would.

For any questions, please contact Village Hall at (847) 599-7500.

2. Village Board Approves Financing Enabling the Addition of Macy's at Gurnee Mills

At its November 7th regular meeting, the Village Board approved two ordinances that enabled the addition of Macy's at Gurnee Mills.  The first ordinance reconfigured a previous development agreement with Gurnee Mills, and the second approved issuance of $9,995,000 in bonds that will allow for the upgrades necessary for Macy's to come to the mall and transform the wing from Bass Pro Shop to the old Circuit City site into a regional shopping center.  Both the Village and Gurnee Mills are excited about the project and believe it will provide an economic boost to the area.  Learn more by visiting the Village's website.

3. Leaf Collection to continue through Saturday, November 26th

Today (Friday, November 11th), Waste Management is working to complete Week 4 of the leaf collection program.  Waste Management was running about a half day behind as of yesterday due to the rain and snow earlier this week.

Residents will have two more opportunities to after today to get their leaves collected.  Please make sure to have your leaves ready for collection as soon as possible.

As a friendly reminder, please place leaves at the curb and not in the street as this may lead to localized flooding.  Correctly placed leaves also make the collection more efficient and lead to less interruptions.  Leaves should be at the curb no later than 6 a.m. on each Monday to ensure their collection.  Look for more details on the Village's website or call Waste Management at (1-800) 796-9696.

4. Jon Callaghan Memorial Turkey Trot 5K Fun Run/Walk to be held Thanksgiving Day (Thursday, November 24th)

The annual Jon Callaghan Memorial Turkey Trot will be held Thanksgiving Day beginning at 8 a.m.  As in previous years, check in will begin at 7 a.m. at Gurnee Fire Station #1 (4580 Grand).  To sign up and learn more about the race, visit the Village's website.

Proceeds from the event help pediatric cancer research, School District 56, housing for those in need and many others.  The race was named in honor of Jon Callaghan, a student at O'Plaine School in Gurnee who passed away in 1997 after a courageous battle with neuroblastoma cancer.

Any donations would be appreciated and sponsorship is welcome. Participation in the Walk/Run is encouraged. Please make checks payable to the Gurnee Turkey Trot and mail to Fifth Third Bank, 7500 Grand Ave., Gurnee, IL 60031, attention Brian Moy.

5. Restricted Left Hand Turns at the US 45/Washington St. Intersection Beginning Today (Friday, November 11th)

Beginning today (Friday, November 11th) and running through Thursday, November 24th, there will be restricted left hand turns at the US 45 and Washington Street intersection.  Traffic moving westbound on Washington Street or southbound on US 45 will not be allowed to make left hand turns during this period so that work on the pavement concrete can be completed.  Detour signs will be posted for motorists during this period.

6. Village's Water Supplier Receives Distinguished Award for Water Quality

Recently, the Village's water supplier, the Central Lake County Joint Action Water Agency (CLCJAWA), received the Phase IV “Excellence in Water Treatment” award for its Paul M. Neal Water Treatment Plant from the Partnership for Safe Water.  Phase IV is the highest possible level of performance achievable in the four phased Partnership program, and signifies optimized plant performance. CLCJAWA has maintained the Excellence in Water Treatment Award for six consecutive years.  The Paul M. Neal Plant is located in Lake Bluff and services all of the CLCJAWA communities including Gurnee, Libertyville, Mundelein, Vernon Hills, Grayslake and the Round Lake area.  For more information on CLCJAWA, visit their website.

7. Eagle Scout Project: Stuffed Backpacks for the Homeless

Local scout Shawn Senter will be collecting stuffed backpacks for the homeless as part of his Eagle Scout project.  He is asking local residents to take an old backpack they have in their home and fill it with items such as blankets, hats and gloves, socks, Kleenex, toiletries (toothpaste, toothbrush, etc.) and other items which may be useful.  Backpacks can be dropped off at Village Hall (325 N. O'Plaine Road) during normal businesses hours (8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday).   Please have all donations to Village Hall no later than Saturday, December 10th.

For any questions, e-mail Clairol1224@comcast.net.  Please put "Eagle Scout Project" in the subject line.

8. Local Resources: Local Resources for Veterans

Each November 11th, we recognize the service of our veterans who placed their lives in danger for our country.  However, a number of Lake County organizations are dedicated to recognizing and assisting our veterans year round.  A few such organizations:

  • The Veteran's Assistance Commission - Lake County's Veteran's Assistance Commission is dedicated to assisting veterans in several faucets of their life.  Services range from aiding in filing claims with the Veterans Administration to generalized assistance with things such as debt management and education.
  • Honor Flight Chicago - As the local chapter of the broader organization, Honor Flight Chicago is dedicated to honoring veterans with a day of honor, remembrance and celebration.  Veterans chosen to participate are flown to Washington D.C. to visit the memorials in their honor.
  • Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center - Located in North Chicago, the Captain James A. Lovell Center is provider of health services for veterans.

9. Question of the Week: Where can I find the water bill change form?

If you're looking to start, stop or change some information on a water billing account, there is only one form you have to use.  You can find it on the Village's website.

With the transition, we anticipate that automatic debit may be an easier option for residents given the increased number of bills per year.  If you would like to sign up for automatic debit, you can use this form found on the Village's website.

For any questions on water billing, please call (847) 599-7550.
