The witnesses stated that an African-American male subject wearing a dark-colored mask walked into the store and displayed a handgun. The suspect placed money from the store into a black backpack that he had brought with him. The suspect then walked out the front door and fled.

Approximately 5 hours later, 3:21 AM on Tuesday November 29th2011, Gurnee Police officers responded to a report of an armed robbery that just occurred at the Econo Lodge Hotel, 3740 Grand Ave. There was one employee inside the hotel at the time of the robbery. The employee was struck and injured by the assailant during the incident.

The employee stated that a male subject wearing a dark-colored mask committed the robbery. The suspect placed money from the hotel into a dark-colored backpack he had brought in with him. The suspect exited the front doors and fled.

Anyone having any information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Gurnee Police Department at 847-599-7000 or Lake County Crime Stoppers at 847-662-2222.

The Gurnee Police Department recommends businesses take the following precautions in an effort to prevent this type of crime:

  • If able, restrict access to the facility by keeping doors locked and “buzzing” people in
  • Be aware when a person enters who’s identity is concealed by a mask/dark glasses
  • Do not hesitate to call 911 immediately
  • Keep cash on-hand to a minimum
  • Have multiple employees present at all times, especially at opening and closing times
  • Insure that phones are near points of sale and that they are functional
  • Insure that alarms and video surveillance systems are operational if you have them

A robbery is most likely to occur during hours of darkness. However, you should remain alert to anyone approaching or entering your place of business at any time of the day. Including when employees arrive to open the business or leave upon closing. Personnel are encouraged to be ever-vigilant in an effort to prevent the opportunity for these crimes to occur.
