Upcoming Changes to the Weekly Announcements
1. Electronic Waste Landfill Ban to Begin Sunday, January 1st
Beginning on January 1st, 2012, the Illinois Electronic Products Recycling and Reuse Act bans certain types of electronics from being thrown into Illinois landfills including TVs, computer monitors, computer towers, laptops, electronic mice and many other standard electronic items you may have in your home (a full list can be found here). Unfortunately, this means that items that Waste Management would normally have collected as part of regular pick up, it can no longer accept. Residents are encouraged to find and use alternative arrangements in order to dispose of their electronics including the following:
The Solid Waste Agency of Lake County (SWALCO) - SWALCO offers both year-round and mobile electronic recycling at various times throughout the year. A list of year-round electronics collection sites and their hours of operation can be found here. The Village's Public Works Department and Warren Township Road District both host mobile collection events during the year. Watch the Village's website or this listserv for upcoming electronics collection events.
Donating to Local Non-Profits - Various non-profits in Lake County will accept used electronics to use as part of their mission. Through United Way of Lake County's website, you can find agency wishlists and decide where you would like to donate. More information is available on the Find Help Lake County website.
For any questions, call SWALCO at (847) 336-9340 or United Way of Lake County at (847) 775-1000.
2. Waste Management to begin Christmas Tree Collection Tuesday, January 3rd
Waste Management will begin its annual Christmas Tree collection service on Tuesday, January 3rd and hold collections on each of the following dates:
Tuesday, January 3rd
Tuesday, January 10th
Tuesday, January 17th
Tuesday, January 24th
Waste Management will stop all collection after January 24th. In order for a tree to be collected, it must be placed at the curb or the edge of the road by 7:00 a.m. on the pick-up day. All lights and decorations must be removed. In addition, the trees SHOULD NOT be placed in plastic bags.Trees over 6 feet should be cut in half so one person can handle them. Also, trees should be placed on top of the snow. Trees buried under the snow could result in Waste Management not collecting them
3. Village Administrator to Retire; Community Reception to be held Friday, January 6th
As mentioned in the December issue of Keeping Posted and in the above article, Village Administrator Jim Hayner will be retiring effective Saturday, December 31st. Hayner has had a 35 year career with the Village including serving as the Village Administrator for the past 24 years. During his tenure, the Village saw explosive residential and commercial growth. Some of the projects that were completed during this time include Gurnee Mills, much of the development along Grand and Hunt Club and KeyLime Cove Water Resort. Hayner also recently lead the negotiations that finalized the financing agreement that will bring Macy's to Gurnee Mills in spring 2013. It is because of Hayner’s leadership that the Village has one of the strongest economic positions among Chicagoland communities and an extraordinarily low amount of debt
In honor of Jim, a community reception will be held on Friday, January 6th from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Steven's Restaurant. Please feel free to stop by during this time and wish Jim best wishes and good luck in his retirement.
4. Meet & Greet for New Village Administrator to be held Monday, January 9th
The Village welcomes all residents and other community members to a Meet and Greet with the Village's new Administrator, Patrick Muetz, on Monday, January 9th at 6:45 p.m. at Village Hall. Please stop to say hello and welcome him to the position. Other members of Village staff will also be available for any questions you may have. For any questions, call Village Hall at (847) 599-7500.
5. Gurnee Police Department to continue Holiday Enforcement Campaign through Sunday, January 1st
The Gurnee Police Department began a holiday traffic safety enforcement campaign on Monday, Dec. 19th which will continue it through Sunday, January 1st. The purpose of this campaign is to increase compliance with safety belt and other restraint laws as well to combat drunk and drugged driving.
Please drive safe, use a designated driver if you plan on drinking and have a great holiday season. For any questions, contact the Gurnee Police Department at (847) 599-7000.
6. Video Sneak Peek: The Village's Snow Plowing and Anti-Icing Video
For the past two years, the Village has discussed the possibility of introducing video as a new communication method with residents and other community members. The first of these videos, which focuses on the Village's snow plowing and anti-icing operations, is now available on YouTube. Click the picture to the below to play it.
The Village will explore other potential topics of interest and begin attempting to make more videos in the future. Look for these as they are posted on this listserv and on the Village's website.
7. Local Resources: Gurnee Park District's Fitness Center
For those looking for a gym or a new gym, the Gurnee Park District's Fitness Center offers a wide variety of equipment and amenities that you may find beneficial. Members can choose from three different membership levels to tailor their experience to their needs. Learn more on the Park District's website.
8. Upcoming Changes to the Weekly Announcements Listserv
As we enter the new year, the Village will make a few changes to this listserv in order to better meet your interests and information needs from the Village. Here a few highlights:
The Question of the Week will be discontinued as a feature and replaced with Weekly Updates, which will give you highlights of some of the Village activities. Many of the question we receive each week are better answered in this format and let you know about our activities during the week. Generalized questions will become small features as they come up. You are welcome to continue submitting questions for the listserv.
There will be more integration of pictures, graphs, video and other information you have requested in the past where possible.
We will be attempting to integrate more information from our fellow local governments to make it easier for you to access information with less clicks.
Do you have any suggestions for what you would like to see? Please e-mail to Erik Jensen at firstname.lastname@example.org.
