1. Referendum on Electrical Aggregation to be held Tuesday, March 20th

As you may know, recent changes in electrical regulation by the State of Illinois have given residents the ability to purchase their electricity from another supplier besides Commonwealth Edison (ComEd).  As part of those regulation changes, municipalities may also bid the cost of electricity on behalf of residents in order to achieve even greater savings.  However, in order to do so, the Village must first gain public support through an advisory referendum.  The Village Board recently approved placing a question on the Tuesday, March 20th primary election ballot.  The Village wishes to get as much information out as possible before the referendum to give residents a fully informed review of their options prior to voting.

A full list of frequently asked questions regarding aggregation can be found on the Village's website.  There will also be an article in the upcoming February issue of Keeping Posted on the subject.  For any questions, please contact Village Hall at (847) 599-7500.

2. Hunt Club Aquatic Center Early Bird Season Passes Available for Purchase beginning Monday, February 6th

Early bird season passes for the Hunt Club Aquatic Center, the Gurnee Park District's local 1500 swimmer capacity center, will be available for purchase beginning Monday, February 6th for the summer 2012 season.  Passes can be purchased on the Park District's website or in person.  For more information, visit the Park District's website.

3. Reminder: SWALCO to hold Household Chemical Waste Collection Event  Saturday, February 11th

As a reminder, the Solid Waste Agency of Lake County (SWALCO) holds household chemical waste collection events at its Gurnee facility (1311 N. Estes) twice a month.  Residents can drop off common chemicals such antifreeze, motor oil, oil-based paints and many others for safe disposal or recycling at these events.  The next event will be held on Saturday, February 11th.  If you would like to participate, please schedule an appointment on SWALCO's website.

As a reminder, the Village contracts with Blackboard Connect to provide the Connect CTY Telephone Notification System to the Village.  In case of an emergency (such as a severe weather event or an Amber Alert) or other event that will impact a large portion of the Village's residents, the Village will send a recorded message out to residents through this system to keep them up to date.  You can sign up to receive alerts through the Village's website

 6. Local Resources: Professional Development Resources through the College of Lake County

If you are considering pursuing professional development in the near future, the College of Lake County (CLC) may have some relevant programs for you.  Through their non-credit education courses, CLC offers a wide variety of subjects that are both general and field specific.  See CLC's website for more information.

7. The Weekly Update: Fire Department to hold CPR Class Thursday, February 9th, Police Department Arrests Car Theft Suspects and more

Administration:
  •  The Administration Department continues preparing the proposed fiscal year 2012/2013 budget, which will be released later this month.  This document is essential in directing and funding the projects the Village manages each year and is one of the core documents of the Village.

Community Development:

  • The Engineering Department continues to oversee storm sewer installation along Waveland Avenue and site improvements at the Spaulding School Administration Building among other projects.  As you may know, the storm water system is an important part of the Village's strategy for managing flooding.  If you notice any localized street flooding, please report it to the Engineering Division at (847) 599-7550.

Fire Department:

  • As part of its commitment to promoting the healthy and well-being of residents, the Fire Department offers classes in basic first aid such as Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), which is used to sustain the heart and lungs of a person suffering from cardiac arrest.  The next class will be on Thursday, February 9th from 6 to 9 p.m. at Fire Station No. 2.  To learn more about this and other trainings or to sign up, please visit the Village's website.

Police Department:

  • The Police Department arrested two car theft and aggravated battery suspects involved in a car theft on Wednesday, January 25th.  Details on the case can be found on the Village's website.  As a reminder, if you see something, say something.  It can help prevent crime and solve cases that might otherwise be more difficult to address.  In an emergency, always call 9-1-1.
  • As a reminder, the Police Department has a very active Neighborhood Watch program that residents can participate in.  As part of the program, residents can come to meetings held twice a year at the Gurnee Police Station and speak directly with officers, sign up for e-mail alerts from the Department or listen to audio from their local meetings on the Village's website.  Upcoming meetings for the Hickory Haven subdivision and neighborhood east of Route 41 and South of Route 132 will be held on Wednesday, February 9th and Thursday, March 8th respectively.  Visit the Village's website for more details.

Public Works Department:

  • The Department's Utility Division has completed the recent water meter upgrade program, which sought to replace older, manual read meters with radio read meters.  These new meters drastically reduce the amount of time required to collect water meter reads and thus, lower operational costs for the Department.  For any questions about meters or the Village's water system, visit the Village's website.  The Department thanks residents and businesses for cooperating with these replacements.
  • During the winter season, the Department's Street Division conducts winter tree trimming, or the process through which crews remove damaged, diseased or dangerous limbs from parkway trees.  This not only promotes the health of the tree but also reduces the chance of any falling or downed branches.  Crews recently completed work in Rolling Ridge and have since moved to Fairway Ridge with the goal of completing one round of the Village every five years.  Learn more about tree trimming and other forestry operations on the Village's website.
