Gurnee, IL - The Gurnee Police Department will be conducting occupant protection enforcement zones throughout the village beginning May 9th through May 26th. This is the 7th of 14 special enforcement campaigns that will be conducted during the 2013-2014 grant year.
These special enforcement activities are funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) with the goal to improve occupant protection use during the overnight hours.
Latest NHTSA statistics from 2011 on seat belt use during the overnight hours from 6 p.m. to 5:59 a.m. identified that 62% of the 10,135 passenger vehicle occupants that were killed were not wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash.
This enforcement effort coincides with the nationwide “Click It or Ticket” campaign that begins on May 9th and runs through the Memorial Day Holiday weekend.
In addition to the occupant protection enforcement zones, officers will be deployed throughout the village to focus on impaired driving and speed enforcement. A roadside safety checkpoint is also scheduled to occur during the late evening hours of May 23rd through the early morning hours of May 24, 2014.
