GURNEE, IL - August 18, 2009 - The Gurnee Fire Department Awards Task Force recently convened to review the nomination for the Gurnee Fire Employee of the Year for the Breakfast Exchange Club of Gurnee. The Awards Task Force is pleased to announce that Battalion Chief Barry Henby has been selected as the 2008 Gurnee Fire Employee of the Year.
Henby has been a member of the Gurnee Fire Department since 1979. Appointed by Mayor Kristina M. Kovarik to the Chief Officer position in 2006, he also serves as an appointed member of the Village of Gurnee’s E911 Telephone System Board. Besides holding numerous Illinois State Fire and Instructor certifications, he is an emergency medical technician paramedic and continues to assist and provide leadership to department personnel in the areas of training and public education.
Gurnee Fire Chief Fred N. Friedl said regarding the award, “It is not an easy task to select just one individual for this award since our organization has so many individuals that put forth that extra effort each and every day! After a lengthy discussion and deliberation Barry was selected as the 2008 award recipient.”
He continued, “In dealing with Barry I have always been impressed by his professionalism and dedication to the people we serve and protect. Even when faced with extreme conditions and exhausting hours, Barry has always maintained a pleasant demeanor, positive attitude, and simply does a great job. Barry’s performance in every way exemplifies the qualities of the fire service that our nation has come to rely upon. The Department is very proud of Barry and congratulates him on receiving this great award.”
Criteria used by the Awards Task Force to select the award recipient include involvement in community affairs on and off duty, customer service, public relations, safety habits, organizational skills, productivity, initiative, attention to detail, management ability and personal qualities including enthusiasm, courtesy, dedication, self-sacrifice and integrity.
In addition to this current award, Henby was also the 2006 Gurnee Days Honoree and the recipient of the 2009 Illinois American Legion Fire Department Award.
The award will be presented at the Gurnee Breakfast Exchange 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony on Sunday, September 6th from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Viking Park. The Ceremony is open and free to the public and will feature posting of Colors by the Fire & Police Honor Guard, guest speaker Mayor Kristina M. Kovarik, United States Navy Great Lakes 50 State Flag Unit, Woodland School District 50 Jazz Band, Gurnee District 56 Spaulding School 2nd Grade Choir and additional presentations the Law Enforcement Officer of the Year and Police Civilian Employee of the Year Awards.
