Gurnee, IL – February 1, 2010 - The Department of Homeland Security has awarded the
Gurnee Fire Department (GFD) a $149,000 grant for the purchase of four Cardiac Monitor/Defibrillators and four Automatic External Defibrillators (AED’s) with monitoring capabilities. The grant was announced in the first round of the Fiscal Year 2009 Assistance to
Firefighters Grant Program (AFGP). This purchase assists the GFD with remaining compliant with government and industry professional standards aimed at promoting the health and safety of its firefighters, visitors, and the citizens of the Village of Gurnee and Warren Waukegan Fire
During an interview with Fire Chief Fred Friedl, the Chief/Administrator of the Gurnee Fire Department, he stated, “We are extremely pleased to have received this grant during these economic times. It will enable the Department to enhance our entire fleet of Cardiac Monitors with enhanced medical capabilities providing our citizens, visitors and fire personnel with quality equipment that will support future technology and national safety initiatives.”
Chief Friedl also added, “I would also like to thank the Fire Department Grant Committee for their outstanding work with this project.” The grant proposal was written and submitted by a Fire
Department Committee consisting of Deputy Chief John Kavanagh, Medical Officer Lieutenant Joseph Arnold and Assistant Medical Officer John McNeill.
The Assistance to Firefighters Grant program was developed to meet the firefighting and emergency response needs of fire departments and nonaffiliated emergency medical service organizations. Since 2001, AFGP has helped firefighters and other first responders to obtain critically needed equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training, and
other resources needed to protect the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards. The first round of the Fiscal Year 2009 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program awarded 926 grants totaling over $77 million.
