Career Fire Service Opportunities
A career in fire service with the Gurnee Fire Department begins with the entry level position of Firefighter/Paramedic. Basic requirements for this position include a minimum age of 18 years but less than 35 years of age, high school diploma or equivalent, current certification as a Fire Fighter II, and, at a minimum, provisional or a system approved paramedic student for Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic (EMT-P) certification. Many people begin preparing for a career in fire service by pursuing additional education, either at the Associate or Bachelor degree level. Area colleges which offer fire service degree programs include the College of Lake County and Southern Illinois University (hosted by the College of Lake County). Individuals interested in pursuing additional education related to the fire service should speak with a college counselor to assist in planning their future educational curriculum.
The ranks of Lieutenant and Captain are promotional positions within the Gurnee Fire Department. Additional training, education, and experience as a firefighter/paramedic help to prepare individuals for these positions.
Other Career Opportunities
For individuals not interested in a career as a firefighter/paramedic or who do not currently meet the minimum requirements, other opportunities exist to become involved in a fire service organization.
Civilian Fire Inspectors (CFI) are responsible for the enforcement of Fire and Life Safety Codes and Ordinances. The CFI's perform inspection and reinspection duties of existing and new structures, review construction blueprints, assist business owners, construction managers, and other contractors in achieving code compliance, and participate in the investigation of the cause and origin of fires. For individuals interested in a career as a Civilian Fire Inspector, the basic requirements are one (1) year of relevant fire service experience and a high school diploma or equivalent. Many people prepare for a career in fire inspection by pursuing additional education, either at the Associate or Bachelor degree level, or completion of specialized courses available through the Office of the State Fire Marshal. Secretarial positions provide administrative support to the Fire Chief, Deputy Fire Chief, Administrative Officer, Fire Marshal, and the Fire Prevention Bureau. Secretarial positions require previous experience and proficiency in using word processing and spreadsheet programs and are involved in the preparation of departmental correspondence, handling telephone calls, filing of reports, maintenance of appointments or calendars for necessary personnel, distribution of mail, and other related functions.
