July 11th Severe Weather Response - 5 p.m. Update
Lake County was impacted by a severe thunderstorm this morning, and there are outages across the Village and greater Chicagoland area. The Village of Gurnee has been in contact with Com Ed representatives. Due the extensive amount of damage over a wide-spread area, Com Ed estimates it could be mid week before power is restored. Residents could be without power for 48 to 72 hours and should take the necessary precautions. Please also be aware the outage could result in interruptions in cell phone service. Currently, a majority of the Village is without power and several roadways are blocked with downed wires.
Com Ed estimates over 765,000 outages in its service territory at the peak of the storm, making it the largest outage in 13 years. Currently over 400 Com Ed crews are working around the clock to restore service. In addition, over 200 additional crews from neighboring states are in route to assist. Power outages and downed wires should be reported to Com Ed at 1-800-Edison-1. If you see a downed power line, STAY AWAY and tell others to do the same. For information on power outages, including maps and the restoration process, please visit Com Ed’s website at www.comed.com .
Gurnee Public Works crews continue to work to clear roadways of debris. Multiple chipping crews have also started to remove debris from the right of way. Public Works will be working into the late afternoon/early evening hours cleaning up. Resident can report debris in the roadway to Public Works at 847-599-6800 or Non-emergency Police at 847-599-7000.
Residents with storm damaged trees on private property are asked to make arrangements with a private contractor for removal as it may be days before Public Works can assist with clean-up of debris that is placed in the right of way.
Please note that due to the electric outage, the Village Board Regular Meeting scheduled for this evening (Monday, July 11th) has been canceled. The next scheduled meeting will take place on Monday, July 18th.
Waste Management will attempt to collect refuse this week, but will be impacted by blocked roadways. If your refuse is not collected on it normal pick-up day, please place it out again next week.
As more relevant information becomes available the Village will share it through its website www.gurnee.il.us , email notifications, and automated phone calls.
