Term Ends April 30, 2019
Village Trustee Cheryl Ross was elected to the Board of Trustees in May 2007. Cheryl, a Gurnee resident her entire life, is a teacher at Woodland Elementary. "I like teaching problem solving. It is especially rewarding when the childrens' eyes brighten as they suddenly realize how to solve a complex problem." In her free time, Cheryl enjoys baking and trying out new recipes, as well as spending time with family and friends.
Cheryl is most proud of her family and that all of her children have college degrees. Her husband, Dave, has been a counselor at CLC for over 30 years. Her daughter, Laura, graduated from Miami of Ohio and received a Master's degree from Temple University; her son, Michael, graduated from Valapraiso; her daughter, Amy, graduated from Carthage College. Cheryl's mother is living with the family since her house was taken as part of the reconstruction of Warren Township High School.
In Her Own Words
When asked what motivated her to become involved in municipal government, Cheryl responded, "I love Gurnee and the people who live here. My dad was Mayor in the 50's and 60's which began my interest in Village affairs. In the early 70's when I was in college, I worked at the Village office. I remember working on an early building code and zoning map. Prior to being on the Village Board, I was appointed to the Plan Commission and served for eight years, which was an excellent education. "
Cheryl was also asked what the best advice she ever received was. "My dad encouraged me to be a good listener, but remember that you can't please everyone all the time, although I like to try."
