Thank you for visiting our website.
The layout of this site illustrates how everything we do centers on our mission “to defend the lives, rights and quality of life of all the residents and visitors we serve with honor and integrity” and our four fundamental objectives: Crime Prevention, Crime Response, Community Involvement and Team Building. This website is a fine introduction to your police department and the many things that we do, but I would offer several suggestions for getting to know us better.
First, the Neighborhood Watch program is a great opportunity to connect directly with the police officers who patrol your neighborhood. Meetings are held to discuss current trends, problems and crime prevention strategies that directly relate to you and your neighbors. Two meetings a year and an e-mail address to stay connected between those meetings and you will have taken the first step toward making your neighborhood safer.
Second, the Citizen Police Academy is a hands-on opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes look at exactly what your police department does and how we do it. If you can give us one evening a week for 12 weeks we will give you a truly unique experience and a chance to really get to know your police department.
Third, the Explorer Program is designed for young adults ages 15-20 to introduce students to the law enforcement career while developing leadership skills, confidence, respect for others, teamwork, conflict-resolution, problem-solving, and law enforcement protocols. Working alongside Gurnee police officers, Explorers receive formal leadership training, assist with police in-service training as role players, work with other police agencies, and participate in drill competitions.
Finally, follow along and get information we share through social media. Like us at facebook.com/gurneepd , join your neighbors on NextDoor.com , and follow VillageofGurnee or me personally KevinWoodside on Twitter. You can also visit Nixle.com to sign up for text message alerts.
Since the 1800s modern policing has embraced the principle that “the police are the public and the public are the police; the police being only members of the public who are paid to give full-time attention to duties which are incumbent upon every citizen.” I believe this concept is essential to effectively policing our community, the police and the community in partnership making the Village of Gurnee a safer place to live and visit.
It is an honor to serve as your Police Chief and I look forward to partnering with you.
