GURNEE, IL- The Village of Gurnee is scheduled to begin a 14-day photo enforcement warning period on Tuesday, July 31, 2012. Motorists who violate the traffic signals at Washington Street at Hunt Club Road will be notified through a warning letter, but will not receive a citation. The warning period will conclude on Tuesday, August 14, 2012.
Beginning at 12:01 A.M. on Wednesday, August 15, 2012, civil penalties in the amount of $100 per infraction will be issued to registered owners of vehicles that violate the traffic signals. This includes drivers who fail to come to a complete stop prior to making a right turn when the signal is red.
The goal of photo enforcement technology is to help make roadways safer and to reduce automobile-related tragedies by addressing red light violations. The campaign seeks to re-establish respect for traffic signals in an effort to enhance the safety of residents and visitors. The objective is to reduce the number and severity of crashes, in addition to injuries and fatalities, caused by dangerous and aggressive driving.
“Since the Gurnee photo enforcement program began in July of 2009, we have seen a decline in crashes and injuries at our photo enforced intersections. We expect similar results at Washington St. and Hunt Club Rd.,” Chief Kevin Woodside said.
