GURNEE, IL - In anticipation of a potential flooding event, the Village of Gurnee is issuing a flood advisory for those residents and businesses located in the Des Plaines River flood plain. As of 2 p.m. on Monday, April 15th, the Des Plaines River is at a level of 7.75 feet, which is causing minor flooding. The National Weather Service currently predicts the potential for two to four inches of additional rainfall through Thursday, April 18th which could result in a significant increase in the river’s level and impact local homes and businesses. The Des Plaines River begins limiting access to Emerald Avenue and Kilbourne Road at 8.5 feet and impacts buildings at 9 feet.
At this time, the Village simply wants to make area residents and businesses aware of the situation. The Village does not see an immediate need to leave the area but has begun taking precautionary measures by securing the necessary supplies for sandbagging should it become necessary. At this time, sandbagging operations have NOT been implemented. The Village has also met and coordinated plans with Warren Township, Gurnee Park District, the Lake County Stormwater Management Commission and the Lake County Emergency Management Agency in preparation for the upcoming event. On-going communication will be kept throughout any flooding and during any clean-up operations.
Should flooding begin impacting local homes and businesses, residents and business owners are reminded to take extreme caution to avoid electric shock. Flooded basements should be reported to the Gurnee Communications Center at (847) 599-7000  in order to have power disconnected.
