GURNEE, IL – As of 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16th, the Des Plaines River is at a level of 7.65 feet, which continues to cause minor flooding in the floodplain. With current National Weather Service predictions of an additional three or more inches of rainfall through Thursday, April 18th, the Village has issued notice to the residents and businesses in the floodplain that a significant flood with the potential to damage property is likely and that sandbagging is highly encouraged in advance of this flooding event. The Village will also release a notice to all residents informing them of a need for volunteers to support a sandbagging effort that will begin on Wednesday, April 17th at 9 a.m. Volunteers, age 18 or over, are asked to report to the Gurnee Grade School playground (940 Kilbourne Road) for registration and assignment.
At this time, the Village does not see an immediate need to leave the area but is continuing to take precautionary measures. The Village’s Public Works Department and Warren Township’s Highway Department will continue sandbag assembly and delivery on Wednesday, April 17th. In addition, sand and bags are available immediately for residents and businesses to fill on their own at 4575 Old Grand Avenue, located across from Fire Station #1.
