The Gurnee Police Department will be conducting occupant protection enforcement zones throughout the village beginning May 10th through May 27th. This is the third of 13 special enforcement campaigns that will be conducted during the 2012-2013 grant year.
Funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) with the goal to improve occupant protect use during the overnight hours.
The NHTSA latest statistics from 2011 shows seatbelt use during the overnight hours from 6 p.m. to 5:59 a.m. identified that 62% of the occupants that were killed were not wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash.
This enforcement effort coincides with the nationwide “Click It or Ticket,” campaign that begins on May 10th and runs through the Memorial Day Holiday weekend.
In addition to the occupant protection enforcement zones, officers will be deployed throughout the village to focus on impaired driving and speed enforcement. A roadside safety checkpoint is also scheduled to occur during the late evening hours of May 24th through the early morning hours of May 25th, 2013.
