Gurnee, IL – The Gurnee Police and Fire Departments responded to an accident involving injury Monday evening at 8:19 PM on Route 120 east of Hunt Club Road. There was one vehicle involved.
Preliminary investigation indicates that a black 2004 Honda Civic 2 door was east bound on Route 120 about a ¼ mile east of Hunt Club Road. The driver of the Honda was allegedly racing with a red 2000 Ford Focus. The driver of the Honda lost control, going into the median ditch between the east and west bound lanes. The Honda is believed to have become air borne and then rolled over, coming to rest in the west bound lanes.
The Honda had four occupants, three males, ages 17, 18, and 20 and one 16 year old female. The female and 20 year old male were rear passengers and were ejected from the vehicle. All three males were taken to Condell Hospital. The female was pronounced dead at the scene by a Deputy Lake County Coroner.
The female victim has been identified as Cynthia N. Perez, 16, of Antioch. An autopsy was to be conducted this morning at the Lake County Coroner’s Facility in Waukegan to determine the cause of death.
The drivers of both vehicles have been taken into custody. The driver of the Honda, Jeremy A. Betancourt, 17, of 41758 N. Circle Drive, Antioch, has been charged with Reckless Homicide, a class 3 felony and Aggravated Street Racing, a class 4 felony. Betancourt was also cited for No Valid Driver’s License and Operating an Uninsured Vehicle.
The driver of the Ford Focus, Michael R. Dawson, 19, of 431 Filweber Ct., Antioch, was charged with Aggravated Street Racing and Operating a Vehicle with an Expired Registration.
Betancourt and Dawson appeared in Lake County Bond Court in Waukegan this morning. Both were remanded to the Lake County Jail on $250,000 bonds.
