Water Billing Error Notification

Please be advised the Village has discovered an error in billing related to water bills dated October 21, 2011.  Customers began receiving these bills on Friday, October 28th.  The error relates to minimum billing charges under the old fee schedule. 

To identify if you received an incorrect bill, look under the “Service Description” section of your bill.  If it  contains the language WA Minimum Charge” you have been incorrectly overbilled and will be issued a new invoice.

What are the current rates for water and sewage?

Effective October 1, 2011, the Village of Gurnee implemented two major changes to the current utility billing system : (1) the water and sewer rates and base fees and (2) how often residents are billed.  The billing system has changed so that now all residents are charged a base fee relative to the size of their water meters, which covers operations and maintenance.  This change replaces the previous practice of charging a minimum bill of 5,000 gallons.  The chart below illustrates the bi-monthly base fees for each meter size:

Is my water safe to drink?

Yes. The Village of Gurnee meets all U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's standards for safe drinking water. You can access the Village of Gurnee water quality report via the Public Works home page at /utility/water_reports.

How do I have my water turned off in the event of an emergency?

For emergency water shut-off, contact the Public Works Department at (847) 599-6800, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. After hours call the police department at (847) 599-7000.

Facts About Your Water

The Village of Gurnee’s water is purchased through the Central Lake County Joint Action Water Agency (CLC/JAWA) and comes from Lake Michigan. The Village has one, three million gallon reservoir and four water towers that make up the storage system for the Village’s water supply. The water distribution system is comprised of 182 miles of water main and approximately 10,000 service connections. 

Gurnee's water is considered moderately hard. Its hardness is approximately 8 grains per gallon or 137 milligrams per liter as CaCO3.
