The Village of Gurnee seeks a team player and motivated individual who is ready to join our team as the Engineering Assistant.  This position is responsible for the application of technical engineering knowledge to public works and land development projects. Work includes performing site plan reviews, surveying, securing and maintaining compliance with approved plans and other regulations, and performing inspections.  

Key Responsibilities: In this role, you will serve as a project coordinator in the planning, design, construction and inspection of a variety of public works projects. You will prepare preliminary cost estimates and bid documents as well as follow the project from design to completion of construction.

Tasks will include, but are not limited to:

  • Inspection of public works and development work to assure that work is completed in compliance with the plans, standards, specifications, special requirements, codes and regulations
  • Review and inspection of work within the public right of way to ensure proper construction and restoration
  • Perform installation and material inspections including grading; proof roll observation; concrete form and concrete material testing; storm, water, and sewer main installation & testing, sediment and erosion control inspections, and post installation material testing
  • Acquire information related to municipal easements, municipal utility locations, and other items on properties in and around the Village for developers, contractors, residents, and other interested parties
  • Conduct plan reviews; evaluate existing site conditions; surveys and analyze data; research related legal documents; prepare ‘as-built’ infrastructure records
  • Maintain inspection files and reports; enter and update inspection records using a desktop computer; prepare reports on daily, monthly and annual activities

Education/Experience: This position requires a valid drivers’ license, three (3) or more years’ comparable work experience, an Associate’s degree in relevant curriculum such as civil engineering, construction management, surveying, or closely related field or 60 hours college coursework

Experience with CAD/Microstation and GIS computer applications and GPS equipment is strongly desired

Pay Range:

Pay Rate:  $$33.38 - $37.54+ / hour - negotiable DOQ/E; full time position plus full benefits:  paid time off – vacation, holiday, personal time; paid sick leave and sick leave incentive programs; employer paid health / dental / life insurance plans; retirement savings options (pension, 457, Roth IRA); tuition reimbursement; clothing allowance. 

Position covered under Local 150 Midwest Operating Engineers Union Contract.

Work Schedule: Full-time position: 40 hours per week - The Village of Gurnee strongly believes in a work/life balance, our schedule is 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
