Maintenance Worker I - Utility Division - June 2024

The Village of Gurnee is seeking a career-minded individual to fill the position of Maintenance Worker I in the Utility Division of Public Works. The Maintenance Worker I position works under the supervision of Maintenance Worker II’s and Lead Maintenance Workers as they build the knowledge and skills necessary for advancement.

MUST HAVE a minimum Class B CDL with air brake endorsement.  Non-CDL candidates will not be considered.

General Duties include all aspects of maintenance and repair of the water distribution and wastewater collection systems such as:

  • Fire hydrant flushing, repairs, and replacements
  • Water main valve exercising, repairs, and replacements
  • Water main break and service line leak repairs
  • JULIE utility locates
  • Pump maintenance and repairs
  • Meter reading, repairs, and replacements
  • Mechanical and electrical troubleshooting
  • Trench and confined space work
  • Operation of specialized tools, machinery, and equipment
  • Snow and ice control operations

Schedule:  Regular work hours generally 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday; additional work hours required including overtime, rotational on-call status, and 24 hour emergency call out on nights, weekends, holidays, and snow events with a 45 minute response time.    


Minimum Class B CDL with air brake endorsement required. Class A with air brake and tanker endorsement preferred; must upgrade to Class A and obtain required endorsements within one (1) year of hire as a condition of employment.

Education and experience equivalent to a high school education level.  Additional formal technical training and/or certifications directly related to this position desirable.

1 to 3+ years’ experience performing construction, infrastructure maintenance, pipe repairs, heavy equipment operation (backhoe, endloader, vactor, etc.), troubleshooting motors, pumps, etc. or work of a comparable nature.  Previous municipal public works experience preferred.

Strong technology and computer skills, and ability to learn multiple software systems.

Certifications related to the field including equipment and/or safety certifications.

The ideal candidate will possess the above qualifications and exhibit a desire for advancement and personal growth in the total water industry.

Pay / Benefits:  $26.80 / hour ($55,744 annual).  Full time position; Village paid Local 150 union health / dental insurance; paid time off; IMRF retirement pension; clothing allowance.
