Photo Enforcement Warning Period to Begin 2/17/2018 For the Westbound Approach of Washington St. at Hunt Club Rd.

GURNEE, IL - The Village of Gurnee is scheduled to begin a 30-day photo enforcement warning period on 2/17/2018.  Motorists who violate the traffic signals traveling westbound Washington Street at Hunt Club Road will be notified through a warning letter, but will not receive a citation. The eastbound approach has been in operation since August of 2012.  The warning period will conclude on 3/18/2018.

Beginning at 12:01 A.M. on 3/19/2018, civil penalties (points will not be added to a driver’s record, nor will insurance companies be notified) in the amount of $100 per infraction will be issued to the registered owner of vehicle that violates the traffic signal.  This includes drivers who fail to come to a complete stop prior to making a right turn when the signal is red.  Drivers who are found in violation will receive a citation in the mail.  They can review images and video of their violations before paying or contesting the citation.

The goal of photo enforcement technology is to help make roadways safer and to reduce automobile-related tragedies by addressing red light violations.  The campaign seeks to re-establish respect for traffic signals in an effort to enhance the safety of residents and visitors.  The objective is to reduce the number and severity of crashes, in addition to injuries and fatalities, caused by dangerous and aggressive driving.

“Since the Gurnee photo enforcement program began in July of 2009, we have seen an overall decline in crashes and injuries at our photo enforced intersections.  We expect similar results at Washington St. and Hunt Club Rd.,” Chief Kevin Woodside said.

Anyone having questions may contact the Gurnee Police Department’s traffic safety division at 847-599-7171, or via email: photoenforcement@police.gurnee.il.us.
