For Release:
Apr 20, 2013

Gurnee, IL -As of 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 20th, the Des Plaines River is at a level of 11.16 feet.  The National Weather Service currently projects that the river will likely remain at or near this level over the next 48 to 72 hours.  At this time, a number of local routes remain closed due to flooding including US Route 41 between Delany Road and IL Route 21, Grand Avenue between IL Route 21 and US Route 41, O’Plaine Road between Washington Street and Grand Avenue and the entirety of Old Grand Avenue, Kilbourne Road and Emerald Avenue.

At 12:30 p.m., the Village issued an automated call to impacted residents and businesses advising them of the river's status and encouraging them to keep all sandbags and other protections in place until the river returns to its banks.  Village staff plans to continue monitoring the river’s level and meeting with other local government agencies including Lake County, Warren Township, Gurnee Park District, Warren Township High School District 121, Woodland School District 50 and Gurnee School District 56 to assess the situation.  Clean-up operations will begin once the river recedes enough to eliminate the possibility of immediate additional damage.  The Village will continue to update impacted residents and businesses on recovery resources as information becomes available and plans are finalized.

Currently, Fire Station No. 1 (4580 Old Grand Avenue) remains inaccessible by vehicle.  The structure remains dry and is in no present danger.  Fire Station No. 2 (6581 Dada Drive) is currently serving as the temporary headquarters for the Department.  Staff and equipment from Fire Station No. 1 continue to be temporarily housed at the Police Station (100 N. O’Plaine Road).
