Des Plaines River Update: Tuesday, April 16th, 2:30 p.m.

For Release:
Apr 16, 2013

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

GURNEE, IL – As of 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16th, the Des Plaines River is at a level of 7.7 feet, which is continuing minor flooding problems in the floodplain.  The National Weather Service recently updated its projections, which now predict a 36-hour weather event with three or more inches of additional rainfall beginning Wednesday, April 17th and continuing through Thursday, April 18th.  This will most likely result in a significant increase in the river’s level and impact local homes and businesses.   The Des Plaines River begins limiting access to Emerald Avenue and Kilbourne Road at 8.5 feet, impacts buildings at 9 feet and approaches the outside lanes of Grand Avenue at 10 feet.

At this time, the Village does not see an immediate need to leave the area but is continuing to take precautionary measures.  The Village’s Public Works Department and Warren Township’s Highway Department are currently preparing sandbags for delivery to those areas within the flood plain.  Palletized sandbags will be made available beginning Tuesday afternoon for homeowners and businesses.

While the Village is primarily monitoring the river, a large rainfall may also potentially create localized flooding in other areas of the Village.  The Village requests that residents and businesses check the stormwater culverts and inlets near their homes or places of businesses and remove any debris which may restrict the flow of water.  Flooded areas should be reported to the Village’s Engineering Division immediately at (847) 599-7550.

Should flooding begin impacting local homes and businesses, residents and business owners are reminded to take extreme caution to avoid electric shock.  Flooded basements should be reported to the Gurnee Communications Center at (847) 599-7000 in order to have power disconnected.

The Village will continue to provide periodic updates and press releases regarding the current event through its website (www.gurnee.il.us) and its electronic listserv system, which new users may subscribe to at this link: http://www.gurnee.il.us/subscribe.  Should emergency notification become necessary, the Village will also utilize the Blackboard Connect automated telephone system to communicate with residents and businesses.  New users may subscribe to this service by visiting this link: https://11297163.bbcportal.com

Questions regarding this update may be directed to Village Hall at (847) 599-7500.
