Update: Domestic Related Death Investigation

Gurnee, IL – On 08/18/17 at 5:31 p.m., the Gurnee Police Department responded to the 4200 block of Harper Ave, for a domestic situation. Responding officers located two deceased males upon their arrival.

The Gurnee Police Department requested the assistance of the Lake County Major Crime Task Force and worked closely with the Lake County Coroner’s Office.

On August 21, 2017, autopsies were performed on both decedents. According to Lake County Coroner, Dr. Howard Cooper, decedent A has been identified as 50 year old Ozell Sampson, Jr. and decedent B has been identified as 30 year old Tony Butler, Jr., both from Gurnee. “Preliminary autopsy results indicate that Mr. Sampson died from multiple gunshot wounds and Mr. Butler died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Toxicology is pending for both,” stated Dr. Cooper. “Our sincerest condolences go out to everyone affected by this terrible tragedy,” he added.

Gurnee Police Chief Kevin Woodside said, “This was a domestic situation and a tragedy for the family involved. This incident poses no danger to the community and our thoughts and prayers are with the family.”
