Temporary Closure of Grand Avenue at US-41 Begins December 1st

GURNEE, IL – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that a full closure will take place on Grand Avenue (Illinois 132) east of Skokie Highway (U.S. 41) in Gurnee beginning Tuesday, December 1st at 7:00 p.m., weather permitting. The closure is necessary for the removal of the temporary Union Pacific Railroad bridge that was constructed as part of the widening and reconstruction of IL 132 and US-41 southbound ramp.

Beginning at 7 p.m. Tuesday December 1st, Grand Avenue will be fully closed at the railroad tracks located east of U.S. 41 until 5 a.m. Monday, December 7th. A posted detour will direct eastbound Grand Avenue traffic to go on south on Skokie Highway, east on Washington Street and north on N. Green Bay Road (Illinois 131) to meet back with Grand Avenue. Westbound Grand Avenue traffic will take the reverse route:

The full closure will reopen at 5 a.m. on Monday, December 7th, weather permitting. In addition to the removal of the temporary bridge, work to be completed by IDOT during the closure includes the removal of the temporary abutments and installation of temporary pavement in order to open up two lanes in each direction of IL 132 for the winter months. Additional lane reductions will be needed in the spring of 2021 to complete the project.

The overall project consists of removal and replacement of the temporary Union Pacific Railroad bridge. It also includes pavement reconstruction and widening on Grand Avenue as well as widening of the southbound U.S. 41 ramp.

Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.
