IDOT Announces Ramp Closures at Grand Avenue and Skokie Highway

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) announced that extended ramp closures will take place at Grand Avenue (Illinois 132) and Skokie Highway (U.S. 41), in Gurnee, beginning, weather permitting, Tuesday, May 29. The ramp closures are necessary to allow for the widening of Grand Avenue and related ramp improvements, part of the ongoing project on Grand Avenue between Estes Street and Magnolia Avenue.

Starting May 29, the ramp from Grand Avenue to northbound Skokie Highway will be closed, as well as the ramp southbound Skokie Highway to Grand Avenue. A posted detour will direct traffic to use N. Riverside Drive (Illinois 21).

The ramps are expected to reopen by Monday, August 6. Traffic on Grand Avenue will remain one lane in each direction between Estes Street and Magnolia Avenue.

The overall project consists of removal and replacement of the Union Pacific Railroad bridge. It also includes pavement reconstruction and widening on Grand Avenue, as well as widening of the southbound U.S. 41 ramp. The overall project will be completed in Spring 2019.

Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.
