Emergency Alert System: Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is Regroup?
  2. It’s the Village’s new emergency alert system. It is a multi-channel notification service meaning that it delivers timely emergency, weather, road-closure and service announcements directly to you via text, email and mobile app.

  3. Why did the Village launch a new system?
  4. The upgraded platform offers faster delivery, richer alert categories and more ways to receive messages, ensuring residents, businesses and visitors stay safe and better informed.

  5. Who should sign up?
  6. Anyone who lives, works, owns property or frequently visits Gurnee—including businesses and commuters—is encouraged to enroll.

  7. What types of alerts will I receive?
    • Emergency Alerts (e.g., active shooter, crime in progress, terror threat)
    • Severe Weather Alerts issued by the National Weather Service
    • Road-Closure & Public-Safety Notifications (traffic updates, safety tips, scam/fraud alerts)
    • Service Announcements (garbage collection, recycling, mosquito spraying)
  8. How will alerts be delivered?
  9. You can receive notifications by phone call, text message, e-mail, and the free Regroup mobile app.

  10. Is there a cost to enroll?
  11. Enrollment is free. Standard text-messaging or data rates from your carrier may apply.

  12. Do I have to opt in if I was registered in the old system?
  13. Yes. Because this is a brand-new platform, all users must sign up to receive alerts.

  14. How do I sign up?
  15. Visit gurnee.il.us/alerts and follow the quick online registration steps.

  16. Can I choose which alert categories I receive?
  17. Yes. During registration, you’ll be able to select specific topics (e.g., weather, service announcements, etc.) and decide which contact methods to use. You can change these preferences anytime.

  18. Will my personal information be shared?
  19. No. Contact details are used solely for official Village notifications and are not sold or released to third parties, except as required by law.

  20. How do I update my phone number or email?
  21. Click here, create an account, edit your profile information, and save your changes. Updates take effect immediately.

  22. Can multiple members of the same household sign up for alerts?
  23. Yes, it is advised that every household member provide their email and phone number to receive alerts and notifications. This will ensure that every member of your family receives the notifications, even if you are not together. It's also beneficial for families with teens or people who work different schedules.

Family members can sign up for their own Regroup account, or you can add their phone numbers and email addresses to yours.

  24. How do I stop receiving alerts?
  25. You can unsubscribe at any time by clicking here and entering your email.

  26. What should I do when I receive an alert?
  27. Read the message carefully, follow any instructions provided, and monitor additional official sources (Village website, social media, local media) for updates. In a life-threatening emergency, always dial 911 first.

  28. Who powers the system? And how do I get the mobile app?
  29. The Village partners with Regroup to host and deliver alerts (hence the “Regroup” mobile app option).

Once you download the mobile app, enter network login/registration code “Gurnee.”
