Des Plaines River Level Update: 4 PM - September 16th

Public Notice – September 16th - 4:00 p.m. Update

As of 4:00 p.m. on September 16th, 2019 the Des Plaines River was at level of 10.46 feet according to reporting information provided by the National Weather Service (NWS). The NWS forecast indicates that the Des Plaines River has remained stable between 10.4 and 10.5 feet for over 24 hours. The Russel Road Gauge, which is north of Gurnee, indicates that water levels have continued to decrease upstream.

At this time, the Village recommends that any residents with sandbags in place do not remove them until an all clear is given by the Village. Depending on water levels and any potential for additional rain, this may not be until late this week or in to the weekend.

The Village encourages residents to be wary of road closures in the community and plan ahead. As of Monday afternoon, the following roads remain closed in Gurnee:

-Emerald Avenue
-Kilbourne Road
-Old Grand from First west to Grand Avenue
-O'Plaine Road between Grand and Old Grand
-Grand Avenue between Route 21 and O'Plaine

It is anticipated that as flood levels recede closer to 10 feet, Grand Avenue may be able to re-open by Tuesday. Check lakecountypassage.com prior to Tuesday morning commutes for updated road closures. Washington and Route 120 are best E/W options to avoid Grand. Viking Park/Middle School access remains open from the west (First St access still open to local traffic).

The Lake County Stormwater Management Commission continues to assess localized flooding. Residents can help Lake County document the extent of flooding by sending a photo and the location of flooding in or around their homes and neighborhood.
