Instruction and Education
Fire prevention and safety is a top priority for the Village of Gurnee Fire Department. Therefore, the Fire Department has several programs in place to help residents and businesses of the Village get the instruction and education they need to ensure first-aid and fire safety practices are implemented.
The Fire Department offers a wide variety of community outreach and education.
Fire Department Public Education Programs
The Village of Gurnee’s Fire Department works hard to prevent fires but, when they do occur, there is an important resource in your neighborhood that your firefighters rely on--fire hydrants. The Adopt-A-Hydrant program is a community activity that enables residents and businesses to take ownership of a fire hydrant within their neighborhood. Once residents/businesses adopt a hydrant, they will keep it free of trash, weeds, and other debris throughout the year. Even more critically, they will keep the hydrant free of snow in the winter. They can also report any damage or leaks to the Public Works Department.
The residents' and businesses' year-round efforts to ensure fire hydrants remain easily accessible and free of issues prevent delays when firefighters need to secure this invaluable water source to put out a fire.
To participate in the program, click here to fill out the form or stop by Fire Station One at 4580 Old Grand Avenue in Gurnee to register and receive an official adoption certificate.
The Village of Gurnee Fire Department is committed to keeping our young children safe by teaching them the importance of fire prevention. The Public Education Division works diligently to establish a presence and partnership with all Gurnee schools by having our Fire Inspectors and Firefighters/Paramedics visit schools and attend various community events throughout the year to educate children on the importance of fire safety.
The Public Education Division distributes over 10,000 pieces of fire safety and education materials yearly to preschool and elementary aged children at no cost to taxpayers. The materials used have been created by the National Fire Safety Council for the Fire Pup program and are designed to reach each child's age level of learning. The materials have garnered positive feedback from both teachers and children.
The program and materials are made possible by tax exempt donations to the National Fire Safety Council, Inc. from individuals, businesses and professionals throughout the Village of Gurnee. Sponsoring 50 children can be done for $125.00. Each donation is greatly appreciated. To show our gratitude, your name or business name will be placed on the “Prestige Page” of all the fire safety activity manuals the children in Gurnee receive.
To make a donation, please go online to National Fire Safety Council donation page and enter program # IL 49-F-13. Or, send your tax-deductible check (made payable to the National Fire Safety Council, Inc.) directly to:
