Have a question, comment, or complaint? If so, please send us a comment. We look forward to hearing from you.
The Gurnee Police Department has developed a new 9-1-1/Communications Public Education Program to benefit children and adults. The goal of this program is to educate people on the uses of 9-1-1 and how to utilize it for emergencies. This program has been used widely to teach children items such as:
Definitions of emergencies
- Services provided by 9-1-1 (Police Department, Fire, and Ambulance)
- Visual recognitions and practical application of 9-1-1
- Consequences of 9-1-1 hang-up calls
- Safety issues
- Criteria for dispatch (knowing address, etc.)
The program can be expanded to instruct teens and adults by including:
- What can 9-1-1 do for people?
- How 9-1-1 calls are received and handled
- 9-1-1 location and number indicators (ANI/ALI) on stationary vs. cell phones
- Increased independence of teens and potential need for 9-1-1
- Knowing location and pertinent facts
- Overview of emergency medical dispatcher
- What is happening while questions are being asked?
- The importance of staying calm
The Gurnee Police Department feels that Public Education is an exceptional way to provide information to the public, and that the goal of having an informed public can best be accomplished through learning experience.
