Maintenance Worker I - Public Works (2019)

Summary:

The Village of Gurnee is seeking candidates to fill a Maintenance Worker I vacancy in the Public Works Department.

Requirements:

General Duties:  Employees in this position perform work of a semi-skilled to skilled nature involving a variety of routine tasks in the maintenance, repair, operation and construction of Village streets / sidewalks, water distribution system, sanitary and storm sewer conveyance systems, parkways and grounds, building maintenance, and other public infrastructure.  Seasonal duties include snow and ice control; landscaping / forestry / tree trimming; special events; and other seasonal responsibilities.  Specific work assignments are provided on a daily basis and may be rotated between Street and Utility divisions.

Schedule:  Work hours generally 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday; additional work hours may be required including overtime, on-call status, and 24 hour emergency call out on nights, weekends, and holidays.  Must be able to meet attendance and work schedule, including overtime, requirements.  Position has a 20 mile living radius within 24 months after hire.

Requirements:  Valid Class B or higher CDL with air brake endorsement at time of application and hire; high school diploma / equivalent; 1 to 3+ years’ experience performing construction, maintenance, landscape restoration, or work of a comparable nature.  Previous municipal public works experience strongly preferred; additional specialized or technical training as obtained through an accredited technical college or career training institute desirable. Other combinations of education and experience which could provide the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform this job may be considered.  Any offer of employment is conditioned on the successful completion of a background screening, drug and alcohol testing and may include a pre-employment medical exam.

Pay / Benefits: Starting hourly rate of pay $23.76 / hour (non-negotiable; hourly rate as determined by union contract).  Full time position; benefits include paid health / dental insurance; life insurance; retirement pension (IMRF); paid time off; clothing allowance.
