Police Evidence Custodian

Summary:

Requirements:

The Village of Gurnee Police Department seeks candidates for the position of Evidence Custodian due to the upcoming retirement of the incumbent in this position.  This is a non-sworn, civilian, full time position and work is generally performed between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday – Friday.  Occasional overtime outside of regular business hours may be required.

This position establishes and maintains procedures for controlling, recording, processing and storing of property and evidence taken into custody, ensures chain of custody requirements are met, and disposes of evidence in accordance with regulations.  Other duties and responsibilities range from transporting documents and evidence to the Crime Lab and acting as department liaison to crime lab; property management duties; department camera maintenance; offering testimony in court cases concerning evidence; auctioning of surplus property; assisting at crime and accident scenes with gathering evidence, photographing / videoing scenes, and logging evidence; performing processes related to seizure-funds money; processing subpoena requests and other related duties.

At a minimum, qualified candidates will have 3+ years law enforcement experience performing comparable duties as a member of a law enforcement agency.  Current LEADS certification or ability to obtain within 60 days of hire; a valid driver’s license; and safe driving history.  Other qualifications include community relations experience; knowledge and experience of police department operations; knowledge of statutes, regulations, case law and general practices related to documentation and maintenance of evidence and property records; knowledge and experience in maintaining chain of custody and security of property and evidence records; basic to intermediate proficiency with current technology and related programs / applications for word processing, spreadsheets, databases, electronic mail, internet, general office equipment, property management system (BEAST) and other law enforcement applications. 

Pay Range:

Hourly rate of pay:  $24+ / hour, depending on qualifications / experience.  Full benefits package including health, dental, vision, life insurance, pension (IMRF); deferred compensation; paid time off, etc.
